Lawyer Claims Proof Meg Whitman Knowingly Hired Undocumented Worker

What did Meg Whitman know and when did she know it?

At issue here isn't wether or not the Republican candidate for CA governor and billionaire hired an undocumented worker, it's wether or not she did so knowingly.

Gloria Allred, the high-profile lawyer of Meg Whitman's undocumented maid, said Thursday that she has documents that will prove the California Gubernatorial candidate knew Nicky Diaz-Santillan was not a legal citizen.

Speaking with Good Morning America's George Stephanopoulos, Allred said, "I told the press that there was a 2003 letter that was sent by the Social Security Administration -- what's called a mismatch letter -- indicating to the employer that there was a mismatch in the Social Security number that was provided by the employee."

Whitman has denied ever receiving such a letter, and has said repeatedly that she was unaware of the true immigration status of her housekeeper. Allred, however, alleged that this claim was false and announced her plans to show the documents Thursday at a press conference.

"Today, at noon, in my office, we are going to produce that letter," Allred said. "I said yesterday, if she denied it I would produce the evidence."

Whitman was also interviewed by Stephanopoulos and maintained her ignorance of the incident.

"We had no idea that she was not here legally," Whitman said, after explaining that Diaz had jumped through the appropriate hoops to prove her citizenship before her employment.

"No idea at all, so absolute unequivocal denial?" Stephanopoulos asked.

"Absolute unequivocal denial," Whitman replied.

Whitman also said that she "wouldn't be surprised" if Allred was working cooperatively with her Democratic opponent Jerry Brown to push the story.

"Gloria Allred's been associated with Jerry Brown since the early 80s. She's contributed to his campaign, she's a well-known Democrat and Gloria does this just about every election cycle, so I wouldn't be surprised if there was a fair amount of coordination here," Whitman said.

Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair Voter Registration Drive THIS WEEKEND!

If last weekend's voter registration drive left you hungry for more, or if you weren't able to come out to Venice, I've got great news for you - one of our star organizers, Tony Salvaggio( who stayed with me ALL day at the booth on Sunday) is running his own voter registration drive next weekend in Manhattan Beach during that city's 2-day hometown fair.

The drive is from 10am-6pm on both Saturday and Sunday. The crowd and the weather should be more mellow - this should be a great opportunity to register even more voters before the October 18 deadline!

Enthusiasm Gap? What Enthusiasm Gap?

Folks, I'm just blown away by your commitment, passion and stamina.

Over 50 of you joined us yesterday at the Abbot Kinney Festival and spent all day registering voters from all over Southern California. Despite the record heat and the smaller than expected crowds, by the end of the day you had registered over 300 new and lapsed voters. Overwhelmingly, the voters we registered were Democrats ready, willing and eager to vote in November.

I know some of you were frustrated that you weren't able to sign up more voters, but please remember, collectively you talked to thousands of folks as you worked the crowd, reminding and encouraging them they needed to get to the polls in November.

Thanks to you, we're one step closer to defeating Meg Whitman and Carly Fiorina in the fall. There's even more to be done, and you'll be getting information from me in the coming weeks of other volunteer opportunities. Together, you will make a real difference.

Ed Buck vs. Meg Whitman

Evidently, Meg Whitman never met a potential constituent she wasn't willing to ignore. Even if it means sicking a 300 lb New Jersey governor on them.

Out of the madness in a world gone crazy, stepped Ed Buck – straight from central casting as an American citizen standing up for the right to question our candidates. Buck showed up on The Ed Show to take a stand against Republican bully Governor Chris Christie who tried to intimidate him into not asking a question during a Meg Whitman forum in California.

Buck is a retired multi-millionaire looking for someone to vote for in this election. He attended Whitman’s rally wanting to ask Whitman a question (she’s another Republican who is avoiding all questions from media and constituents – this should be a warning), but she wasn’t taking any questions and this upset Buck. Buck simply wanted to engage in the American process of democracy, which of course, ticked off Republican Governor of New Jersey Chris Christie. We have no idea why a Governor from New Jersey was running interference at a forum for candidate for California Governor.

Buck merely wanted to tell Meg Whitman that he stood with Warren Buffet, and that he doesn’t need a tax cut; he wants his taxes to go to investments in infrastructure. He got bullied instead. But guess what? He showed up on the Ed Show and turned that around, calling Whitman and Christie out on their cowardly behavior. If you want to see how to stand up to a cowardly Republican, watch this.

Remember Health Care Reform? Some of that Hopey-Changey Stuff Happens This Week.

This week will mark the six month anniversary of the signing of the Affordable Care Act, and finally, a number of provisions will be triggered. Here's what's changing:

  • Provision: Young adults can stay on parents' plan until 26 years old.
  • Impact: Likely to help some jobless young adults. Rules adopted after the law passed say insurers must charge the same for children regardless of age. That is good news for those with infants and older children who buy individual coverage—they previously paid more to cover the expensive first two years and those in their 20s—bad news for most others.

  • Provision: New plans must provide dozens of preventive services without charging a copayment. Applies only to plans sold after Sept. 23.
  • Impact: Government hopes to improve public health. Insurers say extra services are driving premium increases.

  • Provision: No lifetime limits on benefit payouts.
  • Impact: Many employer plans have lower limits, while they're often higher in individual plans.

  • Provision: Begins to phase out annual limits on benefit payouts, starting by making the limit no less than $750,000.
  • Impact: May be limited in some cases. Employers whose plans don't meet requirement can apply each year for a waiver. Individual plans that are grandfathered are also exempt.

  • Provision: Insurers can't deny children coverage because they have a pre-existing condition.
  • Impact: Regulators broadened the provision so that insurers, in effect, must guarantee coverage to all consumers under age 19. Most helpful to people buying insurance on their own.

Stuff You Can't Make Up

Yes, it's real.

Secretary of State Debra Bowen Needs Our Help!

Here's a great opportunity to help a real Progressive champion right here in California - Debra Bowen.

As California's 30th Secretary of State, Debra Bowen works every day to build up election integrity and break down government barriers.

On her watch as the chief elections officer for the largest state in the nation, Debra's goals are to ensure that voting systems are secure, accurate, and accessible, and that voters have confidence in the final election results because every ballot is counted exactly as it was cast.

But Debra is being challenge by a well-funded conservative Republican, a millionaire developer who has voted only once in his life.

She needs our help. That's why I've signed on with others in our community to hold a fundraiser for Debra, because we can't afford not to support this progressive champion.
